Career Consultant
Do you have questions about your music career? Our Career Consultant
can help! The music business is a challenging business to break in to,
because there is no one specific road to success. That’s why there are so
many questions - because there is no one “right” answer. Let’s look at the
main question that comes up, after you record your music...What Now?

Getting an record deal- Once you have a product you feel represents
you and the image you want to portray, the next step is to pitch the project
to A& R people (Artists & Repetoire) at the major labels. One thing to keep
in mind...it may be difficult to get a meeting with one of these people,
especially if you do not come to them as “recommended” by someone
they do know. But that won’t be nearly as hard as getting a second
meeting, if your project is not professional. That does not mean
“expensive”. But if you won’t make the effort to give them a quality
product of your own music, why would they consider putting a half million
dollars into you... recording a new CD for you and launching your career?
That’s what it costs a label to record and promote a new act.
Think about it from their perspective. That’s what you have to do.

Getting a publishing deal- There are many different ways to
approach songwriter demos. The issue of “to record a full band demo
or not” always comes up for discussion. (See “It’s a Jungle Out There” -
in Demos). Let’s get to “the next step” - what you can do after you’ve
recorded 3-4 of your best songs and put them together on a CD.
Pitching your song demo to a publisher for a publishing deal, is one
option - just make sure it’s a quality demo. (That doesn’t mean
“expensive”). Your demo is the all-important “first impression”.
You want it to be good. Also, consider making an appointment with
someone at BMI and ASCAP. They have a staff that can listen to your
songs and give you ideas about what to do next. They are a great
resource. And you can find their phone numbers in Resources.
